I am an European musician and violinist of Austrian origin specialising in historical violin instruments and related research. My focus lies on the repertoire of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods, conducting ensembles ranging from Renaissance consorts to opera ensembles, as well as teaching, giving masterclasses and lectures throughout Europe and beyond.
During my concert diploma violin studies in Vienna at today’s University of Music and Arts I discovered historical violin instruments and soon found myself performing with orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe, gaining invaluable experience in performances all over the world. I then took up studies of baroque violin in The Hague. While I was busy planning, directing and playing my own projects with my ensembles, I also took on my first teaching position, building up the baroque violin class at the new department at the music conservatory of Vienna, today’s MUK. Most of my time left for artistic projects, I spent with the leading early music groups Les Arts Florissants from France and La Petite Bande from Belgium.
Following my appointment as professor in Leipzig, I continued to regularly direct opera projects, developed new areas of study as head of department, established collaborations and pursued my research activities. I extended my research focus to the Renaissance and present and publish mostly on topics related to historical violins and their playing techniques.
As a passionate musician, I have always found the greatest satisfaction in playing and experiencing music, and in sharing this joy with my fellow musicians. Such musical proximity I was able to find with my colleagues in Graz, where I am currently professor of historical violin instruments and head of the early music institute. At the same time, I went on directing opera productions, performing internationally and I completed my doctorate at the centre for artistic research in Graz, where I worked on various research projects and since work on a large scale, externally funded research projecton the art of sound production on historical violin instruments.
My enthusiasm for exploring new horizons has also more recently led me to gain experience in contemporary and electronic music.
The commitment to the dissemination of music, research, and its contexts to a wide audience and to the promotion of greater understanding among a more diverse public has resulted in the joint organisation of a concert series in Graz as well as organising Early Music courses including concerts and other events.
